Online private schools gain state exemptions
Beginning July 1, 2025, Tennessee’s State Board of Education cannot require qualifying private schools to follow certain state rules. These include class-size limits, minimum instructional days or hours per school day, and student vaccination requirements. Schools must offer fully online, self-paced programs and hold accreditation from the Distance Education Accreditation Commission. They also need regional accreditation from a Category III agency listed in state board policies. The exemptions apply to the 2025–2026 school year and every school year after that. The law took effect upon becoming law for rulemaking purposes.
