Covered criminal defendants pay $125 fee

Tennessee courts must collect a $125 victims assistance fee from people who plead guilty or no contest, or are found guilty. It also applies to diversion pleas for covered offenses and people found criminally responsible as principals for those offenses. Guilty findings and guilty or no-contest pleas for attempts or conspiracies to commit covered offenses also trigger the fee. This fee is on top of all other taxes, costs, and fines. The clerk keeps $15 for processing and handling. The remaining $110 goes to the county where the offense occurred, only for its previously designated victims assistance program. The law took effect upon becoming law.
