Parents get notices after classroom evacuations

Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee public schools must notify parents or legal guardians after covered classroom evacuations. This covers removing some or all students from a classroom or teaching area because of another student's behavior. That behavior must be violent, aggressive, or severely disruptive and create a safety concern or substantially interrupt teaching. The principal or a designee must notify families of every student present by the end of that day. Notice must wait during an ongoing emergency or a state or local police investigation. Delayed notice is required after the emergency ends or the principal or designee determines notice will not hinder the investigation. Notices must confirm the evacuation, briefly explain why it happened, and describe steps taken for student safety and supervision. They must not share student information protected by federal or state privacy laws. Schools must keep written or electronic records of the evacuation's date and time, number evacuated, notification timing and method, and responsible staff member. Local school boards and public charter school governing boards must adopt policies to carry out these rules.
