Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee educators face a ban on sexually related behavior involving covered current or former students. It covers current students at a school or district where the educator teaches or has other official duties. It also applies if the educator held those duties within the past 12 months. Former students are covered for 12 months after graduating, withdrawing, otherwise leaving enrollment, or completing the school's or district's highest grade. For former students, the educator must have taught or held official duties during the student's enrollment. Banned behavior includes sexual jokes, remarks, teasing, innuendo, pressure for dates or sexual favors, inappropriate touching, groping, and kissing. It also includes threats of physical harm and sexual offenses defined by state law; the list is not exhaustive. Consent does not excuse the behavior, nor does a lack of communication to the student in any format. Violations must be reported to the state board of education under its rules and are grounds for educator license discipline. The educator ethics code incorporates this ban, and authority to make rules took effect when the law became law.
Beginning July 1, 2026, Tennessee teachers must give written resignation notice to the director of schools. They must give notice at least 30 days before the resignation takes effect.
