Tennessee public charter school boards can hold scheduled meetings electronically under the same rules as local school boards. Those rules generally require an in-person quorum and allow limited weather or disaster exceptions. Board members living outside Tennessee can join every scheduled meeting electronically. Charter board meetings are public business and must follow Tennessee's open meetings law, except where the electronic-meeting permission overrides it. Charter schools must keep required public meeting notices current on their websites.
Effective upon becoming law, Tennessee local school boards generally need a quorum—the minimum required number of members—physically present for electronic participation. Bad weather or a natural disaster allows an exception when gathering that quorum is impractical or unsafe. Boards can use this exception no more than three times per year. Every member participating in a meeting with electronic participation must be visually identified during the meeting.
