Lifetime protection expands for out-of-state felony victims

A felony committed in another state can now support a lifetime protection order in Tennessee. The crime must qualify as an offense covered by Tennessee’s lifetime protection law. If not identified as a covered offense, its legal elements must match those of a comparable Tennessee offense. For these out-of-state cases, you file in the county where the person you seek protection from lives. If that person lives outside Tennessee, you file in your own Tennessee county. For other covered offenses, you can file where that person lives or where the crime occurred. If that person lives outside Tennessee, you can also file in your own Tennessee county. These changes took effect when the act became law.
