Stronger privacy for crime victims and witnesses

Starting May 6, 2026, victims and witnesses are not forced to state their home, phone, work, or other locating details in court, including juvenile court. A judge can order disclosure only after finding a compelling need, and that hearing is held in private. Beginning July 1, 2026, for crimes on or after that date, a victim can ask to use initials instead of a full name in public criminal filings and records from prosecutors, courts, police, and corrections. This initials rule does not apply to protective orders, stalking injunctions, or Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division records. Agencies must give the full name if a court orders it and must keep records needed to follow lawful orders.
