Utah drivers gain fuel tank search protections
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah limits when government officials, including police, can inspect vehicle fuel tanks for dyed diesel. Officials need probable cause to believe the owner or driver violated the dyed-diesel law, or the owner's or driver's consent. They can also inspect at a port of entry under state law to check compliance with state and federal laws. Driving on a highway alone, without other facts pointing to a violation, does not establish probable cause.
