Harsher penalties for false 911 reports

Beginning May 6, 2026, penalties for false or abusive 911 reports increase. Reporting a non‑existent emergency is a class B misdemeanor; it becomes a second‑degree felony if it involves a weapon of mass destruction. Falsely claiming an imminent or future threat of serious injury or death at a place is a second‑degree felony. Other listed offenses, including repeated non‑emergency 911 contacts and repeat false changing‑room reports, are class B misdemeanors. A third or later conviction for these offenses, or reckless acts that cause serious injury or $5,000 or more in losses, are class A misdemeanors. If the conduct leads to a death, it is a third‑degree felony. Courts must also order you to repay response costs and impose at least four days in jail or 40 hours of community service; a judge may reduce the payback amount on the record.

Stricter bans on false 911 reports

Beginning May 6, 2026, the law bars two kinds of 911 abuse. You cannot contact 911 when you know there is no real or perceived emergency after a dispatcher, officer, or prosecutor already told you not to use 911 for that issue. You also cannot repeat a false 911 report about a sex-designated changing room or help someone else make that false report. These rules protect emergency lines for real crises.
