How to signal turns, lane changes, and stops

Beginning May 6, 2026, you must signal for at least the last two seconds before turning or changing lanes. Do not turn, merge from an ending lane, or move left or right until it is reasonably safe and you have signaled. Signal before stopping or suddenly slowing when you have a chance, to warn the driver behind you. Use hand signals or signal lamps: from the left side, arm straight out for left, up for right, and down to stop; cyclists may point the right arm straight out for a right turn. Do not flash a signal on one side only on a disabled or parked vehicle, or as a “do pass” to cars behind.

No turn signal at roundabouts

Beginning May 6, 2026, you do not have to signal when entering or exiting a roundabout. All other signaling rules still apply.

Signal violations are infractions

Beginning May 6, 2026, breaking these signaling rules is an infraction. You can be fined or face other minor penalties. The law does not set the fine amount.
