Drivers face fines for school-zone speeding
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah sets a 20 mph maximum in reduced-speed school zones. Driving faster is a class C misdemeanor. First-offense minimum fines are $260 at 21–29 mph, $420 at 30–39 mph, and $760 at 40 mph or faster. Higher minimums apply to repeat offenses within three years of a previous conviction or bail forfeiture. Those minimums are $320 at 21–29 mph, $560 at 30–39 mph, and $960 at 40 mph or faster. The Driver License Division must track these convictions and bail forfeitures separately and distinguish first from later convictions. These school-zone rules take priority over related general speed-limit and fine rules.
Service can replace some school-zone speeding fines
Beginning May 6, 2026, courts may order service instead of all or part of a reduced-speed school-zone speeding fine. This option is unavailable for repeat offenses within three years of a previous conviction or bail forfeiture. The law also removes the mandatory service requirement involving observation of a school crossing guard. Service in place of a fine remains the court's choice, not a driver's guaranteed right.
