Beginning May 6, 2026, if your criminal debt is not delinquent or in default, the court can forgive all or part of unpaid fines, fees, surcharges, and interest when it finds hardship for you or your family. This never covers restitution principal or interest. Forgiveness is discretionary.
Beginning May 6, 2026, you can ask the sentencing court to fix errors or change your payment plan before your sentence ends. If you show changed circumstances or new evidence and hardship, the court can modify your schedule. The court can also order you to pay a set amount by a date, even if the debt is not delinquent. If you are under the board’s jurisdiction, you can ask the board anytime before your sentence ends to change your plan under the same hardship standard.
Beginning May 6, 2026, you can ask the court for help with fines and fees if paying is a hardship. The court can let you do compensatory service at at least $12 per hour to reduce unpaid fines, fees, surcharges, and interest. Or the court can cut those amounts by what you paid for a court‑ordered treatment or course, if you finished it and show proof. These options never reduce restitution principal or interest, and they apply even if your account is not delinquent or was required by law. A prosecutor can object that relief is not in the interests of justice; the court may then deny it.
