Wildlife review required for large renewable projects

Beginning May 6, 2026, owners or operators of solar or wind plants over 10 megawatts must consult the Division of Wildlife Resources when applying for a local permit. They must submit the project location, layout, timeline, and any wildlife surveys, and meet with the Division. The Division must give written recommendations within 30 days after it gets a complete request and will set rules for this process. Applicants must file proof of consultation and explain measures they will take to address the recommendations. Local governments must consider the recommendations, but the Division cannot approve or deny permits and owners are not required to follow them. Local governments keep final say.
