Beginning May 6, 2026, certified peace officers or animal control officers can take animals tied to listed abuse crimes. They make reasonable efforts to notify the owner. They may shelter or place the animal. With owner permission, they may humanely destroy the animal. If an animal is past recovery, an officer may destroy it after a vet’s judgment, two citizens’ judgment, or owner consent.
Beginning May 6, 2026, officers who care for a seized animal have a lien for reasonable care or destruction costs. After at least five days’ notice of the lien and amount due, a court orders sale, destruction, or transfer if you do not give up ownership. If you voluntarily place the animal or a court transfers it, the new owner must give minimum care. The new owner must block the former owner from any contact. The new owner may resell or otherwise place the animal under humane practices.
All changes in this law start May 6, 2026. Duties, authority, and procedures apply from that date.
