Sexual-offense victims gain protection from lie-detector demands

Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah police, prosecutors, courts, and other government officials cannot request or require lie-detector tests from sexual-offense victims. This ban applies during criminal investigations and prosecutions and protects children as well as adults. Officials cannot make testing a condition for moving forward, and refusal cannot block an investigation, charges, or prosecution. Covered crimes include sexual offenses, sexual exploitation, and incest. The law excludes enticing a minor, lewdness involving a child, and a computer technician’s failure to report child sexual abuse material. These protections do not apply to proceedings begun before May 6, 2026.
