Utah House sponsors can abandon bills

Beginning May 6, 2026, a chief sponsor can abandon a bill by filing a form with the chief clerk before the bill passes the Senate on third reading. The chief clerk then files the bill. Within one legislative day, the presiding officer publicly announces the abandonment. Abandonment strikes the enacting clause, and that bill cannot be revived. The Office of Legislative Research and General Counsel notes the change on the bill’s webpage. A representative may later file a new bill with the same text.
