Utah couples face deadline for marriage recognition
Beginning May 6, 2026, Utah law sets a filing deadline for court recognition of marriages without a formal ceremony. Petitions must be filed before May 5, 2027; filing is barred on and after that date. You must file during the relationship or within one year after it ends. A court may recognize the marriage if both people made a marriage agreement, are of legal age, and can consent. Both must also be legally able to marry, have lived together, and mutually take on marital rights, duties, and obligations. They must present themselves as spouses and have a consistent, general reputation as spouses. Evidence can take any form and follows the usual court evidence rules. The law also preserves protection for marriages performed by someone who claimed authority but lacked it. That protection requires consummation and a belief by at least one spouse that the officiant had authority and the marriage was lawful. Unless another law explicitly allows it, these rules do not validate prohibited or void marriages or bypass Utah's other marriage requirements.
