From May 6, 2026 through May 5, 2027, you can ask a Utah court to legalize a marriage that was not solemnized. The court can approve it only if both partners were of legal age and able to consent, could legally marry in Utah, lived together, took on marital duties, and held themselves out as spouses. You must file during the relationship or within one year after it ends. You can prove the marriage with any kind of evidence under normal court rules. No petitions may be filed after May 5, 2027.
Beginning May 6, 2026, a marriage is not invalidated just because the officiant lacked authority, if you or your spouse believed they had authority and the marriage was consummated. This protection does not make a marriage valid if it is prohibited or void under Utah law, or if it fails core statutory requirements confirmed by a court. It shields couples from losing status due only to an officiant’s paperwork problem.
