Beginning January 1, 2027, the state runs a Purple Alert system to help find missing vulnerable people. The Department of Public Safety manages it and works with law enforcement. It follows the same teamwork model as Amber Alerts unless rules say otherwise. The department writes clear rules for requests, activation, how long alerts last, and canceling them.
Purple Alerts do not use the Emergency Alert System. Highway signs only light up in the area where the person was last seen. Alerts cannot share a person’s specific medical diagnosis. These rules focus alerts and protect privacy.
A "vulnerable adult" is age 18 to 59 with a qualifying impairment. People with dementia are not included. A "vulnerable minor" is under 18 with a qualifying impairment. Police can ask for a Purple Alert when the person is a vulnerable individual, an alert is likely to help, and there is enough useful detail. The department must activate the alert if those rules are met, and for minors only when Amber Alert rules are not met.
