Emergency teaching experience counts toward licenses

Wisconsin’s Department of Public Instruction must count teaching experience gained under an emergency license issued under PI 34.028. It counts toward experience requirements for experience-based licenses under PI 34.040(2)(d) and school administrator licenses under PI 34.065(4). Master educator status recognizes National Board for Professional Teaching Standards certification or a department master educator license under PI 34.042. The law also updates school administrator license references to subchapter VIII of PI 34. For applicants licensed in another state under the covered pathway, the department uses their out-of-state license and administrator experience to determine the license category and covered grades.

Old industrial arts degree rule ends

The law removes an old rule treating certain industrial arts teachers as having a bachelor’s degree for salary and promotion. It covered people who taught that subject on January 1, 1936, with five years of practical or teaching experience. The department still cannot issue an industrial arts teaching certificate or license without one of two qualifications. Applicants need three years of practical experience beyond apprenticeship or four years of institutional training in industrial arts subjects.
