Military family investigations trigger limited defense notices
Wisconsin agencies must notify appropriate U.S. Department of Defense authorities within 24 hours of starting certain child protection investigations. This covers investigations of child abuse, neglect, or unborn child abuse. Notice is required when the agency knows or has reason to know a parent serves in the U.S. armed forces, a reserve component, or the Wisconsin National Guard. The notice can include only the child’s or expectant mother’s name and address and the fact that an investigation began. Reports, notices, and related records are confidential, with disclosure limited to recipients allowed by law.
