More breast exam coverage for Wisconsin patients

Covered Wisconsin health plans and Medicaid must cover medically necessary diagnostic breast exams, including imaging such as MRI and ultrasound. They must also cover supplemental screening for people with increased breast cancer risk or heterogeneously or extremely dense breasts. Risk follows National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines; breast density follows the Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System. Covered insurance plans, including state employee and self-insured local government and school plans, cannot charge deductibles, copays, or coinsurance for these exams. To preserve health savings account eligibility, some high-deductible plans can apply deductibles until the federal minimum is met. That exception does not apply to federally defined preventive care. The law takes effect on the first day of the fourth month after publication. For conflicting plan terms, coverage and cost protections start with plan years beginning January 1 of the following year. For conflicting union contracts, they start with policy years beginning on the later of the effective date or contract establishment, extension, modification, or renewal.

Mammogram coverage reaches preferred provider plans

Wisconsin preferred provider plans must follow existing mammogram coverage rules, alongside defined network plans. Those rules retain two screening mammograms for women ages 45–49 who meet existing criteria, and annual mammograms starting at 50. Plans can still apply network requirements and the same exclusions and limits used for other radiological exams. The law takes effect on the first day of the fourth month after publication. For conflicting plan terms, the requirement starts with plan years beginning January 1 of the following year. For conflicting union contracts, it starts with policy years beginning on the later of the effective date or contract establishment, extension, modification, or renewal.
