CDL grant rules for trainees
The trained person must get their first Wisconsin commercial driver license after March 23, 2024. If the applicant is not a training provider, the person must get that first Wisconsin CDL after subdivision 3.b takes effect. The department may not award more than one grant for the same trainee. These timing rules decide who can be tied to a grant.
Wider CDL grants with tighter rules
The law lets an applicant provide training or pay a third party to train a Wisconsin resident to drive commercial trucks. The training must meet federal rules in 49 CFR part 380, subparts F and G. The trainer (applicant or third party) must be listed on the federal Training Provider Registry. The applicant must have at least one Wisconsin facility on that registry, and the training must be at or through that Wisconsin site.
