Celanese's vinyl acetate chemistry reaches three structurally unrelated consumer and industrial markets through the same polymer platform: (1) Architectural paint binders — VAE (vinyl acetate-ethylene) emulsion polymer is the primary binder in water-based interior and exterior architectural paints; the white liquid emulsion is 40-50% of any latex paint by weight; Celanese's ~20% global VAE market connects it to residential construction and renovation; (2) Adhesives — polyvinyl acetate (PVAC, white school glue, wood glue) is the adhesive in most non-structural bonding applications; Elmer's Glue-All formula is based on PVAC; also in packaging adhesives for food containers and paper; (3) EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) for solar encapsulant — EVA film encapsulates solar cells in crystalline silicon panels, bonding the silicon wafer to the glass cover; every conventional solar panel contains EVA encapsulant. Same Celanese VAM chemistry: the binder in the paint on your walls, the glue in your office, and the encapsulant protecting solar cells from moisture. The modern Celanese Corporation traces through multiple corporate transformations to American Celanese Corporation (founded 1918 as Celanese Chemical Company), which was originally established to commercialize cellulose acetate from British technology. Cellulose acetate had been developed during WWI for aircraft wing dope (to tighten and weatherproof fabric wings) and was subsequently developed into acetate textile fibers and later cigarette filters. Celanese supplied cellulose acetate tow for cigarette filters, which became standard after the 1952 'cancer scare' triggered by Reader's Digest articles linking cigarettes to lung cancer. Cigarette manufacturers introduced acetate filters partly for health theater — consumer perception of reduced harm — but the filters were largely ineffective at reducing harmful substances while successfully transforming cigarettes from a plant-based to a plastic-containing product. The unfiltered cigarettes that caused cancer became filtered cigarettes that also cause cancer but create a global microplastic waste problem (cigarette filters are the most collected plastic litter globally). Celanese, as a major acetate tow supplier, has been directly embedded in the global tobacco supply chain and its environmental legacy for 70+ years.
