Croda International was founded in 1925 in Goole, East Riding of Yorkshire, by George William Crowe and Harold Dawson -- the company name is a contraction of their surnames (CROwe + DAwson). They started by refining used motor oil and vegetable oils in a small plant on the Aire and Calder Navigation canal. Over decades, Croda developed expertise in oleochemistry -- the chemical transformation of fats, oils, and fatty acids into specialty ingredients. This expertise became the foundation for cosmetic emollients, pharmaceutical excipients, and industrial lubricant additives. When mRNA vaccine technology required lipid nanoparticle (LNP) delivery systems in 2020-2021 (as in the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID vaccines), Croda was one of a very small number of companies supplying the specialty lipid components. The same Yorkshire oleochemistry company that makes the emollient in Dove soap also makes critical components of the COVID mRNA vaccines that have been administered to billions of people.
