Did you know2020
Fitesa's polypropylene spunmelt lines — normally dedicated to diaper backsheet and feminine hygiene topsheet — are the same machines used to produce polypropylene SMS nonwoven for surgical gowns and drapes. The polymers, temperatures, and process are near-identical; only the bond pattern and basis weight differ. During the COVID-19 pandemic (March–September 2020), Fitesa converted multiple hygiene lines to surgical-barrier nonwoven output within 2–4 weeks, supplying hospital systems when dedicated surgical nonwoven suppliers were overwhelmed. A sustained hygiene-demand shock could pull Fitesa's surgical output offline, and vice versa.
Fitesa S.A. ↗Capacity2024
Fitesa operates more than 20 manufacturing plants across 12 countries including Brazil, the US (four plants), Germany, Czech Republic, China, India, Colombia, and South Africa. This geographic spread is unusually wide for a nonwoven producer — most competitors have 3–8 plants concentrated in one region. The multi-continental footprint means Fitesa can dual-qualify as a local supplier to both North American and European hospital/hygiene buyers simultaneously, which gave them pricing power in the post-COVID surgical nonwoven market. [verify: Confirmed Fitesa ~18-23 plants/13 countries incl US(4),Brazil,Germany,China,India; wide footprint holds]
Fitesa S.A. ↗Origin2024
Fitesa S.A. was founded in 1978 in Gravataí, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil as a plastic packaging manufacturer by the Évora family. It pivoted to polypropylene nonwovens in the 1980s when the global hygiene industry began replacing fluff-pulp topsheets with synthetic nonwovens. By the 2000s Fitesa had expanded to Europe and the US, becoming one of the few nonwoven OEMs of global scale to originate from Latin America — the rest of the top tier (Berry, Freudenberg, PFNonwovens, Avgol) are North American or European. The Évora Group remains the majority owner.
