  • Did you know2023

Holcim is publicly known as a cement company, but their 2021 acquisition of Firestone Building Products ($3.4B) transformed them into a company that makes both the building foundation (cement concrete) AND the building envelope (roofing membranes, waterproofing, insulation). Commercial roofing membranes (TPO, EPDM) are manufactured from thermoplastic polyolefin or synthetic rubber — completely different chemistry from Portland cement. Holcim is now the only major company that can supply both the structural concrete AND the roofing system for the same commercial building. This integration also connects Holcim to the data center construction boom: hyperscale data centers (Amazon, Google, Microsoft) are among the largest purchasers of commercial concrete AND commercial roofing membranes simultaneously. Holcim supplies both the pad the data center is built on AND the membrane that keeps the server halls dry.

  • Origin2023

Holcim is the product of the 2015 merger of Lafarge SA (French; founded 1833; built lime for the Suez Canal in the 1860s under Ferdinand de Lesseps) and Holcim Ltd (Swiss; founded 1912 as Holderbank Financiere Glaris). At the time, it was the largest industrial merger in Swiss corporate history and created the world's largest cement company. Lafarge's origin in lime production for the Suez Canal (1859-1869) is significant: the canal required millions of tons of hydraulic lime to set underwater, and Lafarge's Grenoble quarries were specifically chosen because their belite-rich limestone produces slow-setting hydraulic lime that hardens underwater. The same fundamental chemistry (calcium silicates reacting with water to form solid crystals) that set the Suez Canal masonry in 1860 is the basis of every Portland cement formulation today. Cement production is responsible for approximately 8% of global CO2 emissions — more than aviation — because calcination (converting limestone CaCO3 to lime CaO) releases CO2 that cannot be eliminated by switching to renewable energy.
