Momentive Performance Materials is the commercial descendant of GE Silicones — the silicone business that General Electric built during WWII based on Dr. Eugene Rochow's 1940 discovery of the "direct synthesis" of methylchlorosilanes. GE needed silicone materials for insulating electrical components in aircraft and military equipment that would remain stable at extreme temperatures (-60C to +200C). The direct synthesis process (copper catalyst, methyl chloride + silicon metal → dimethyldichlorosilane) is still the basis of all commercial silicone production today. GE Silicones became a major business; GE sold it to Apollo Global Management in 2006 as Momentive Performance Materials, which then filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2013 due to overleveraged LBO debt. The company emerged from bankruptcy, and KCC Corporation (Korean paint and coatings company) acquired it in 2024. The WWI-WWII aircraft electrical insulation chemistry that GE developed is now a Korean industrial holding. The same silicone chemistry that kept WWII aircraft instruments functioning is in every bottle of dimethicone hair conditioner.

KCC Corporation (South Korea's largest paint and glass company) completed its acquisition of Momentive Performance Materials in March 2024, shifting ~10% of global specialty LSR supply from US to South Korean corporate control. Momentive was previously majority-owned by Apollo Global Management. Brand and operations remain under the Momentive/SILOPREN name.
