Nan Ya Plastics was founded by Y.C. Wang (Wang Yung-ching) in the 1950s as part of the Formosa Plastics Group — Wang having started Formosa Plastics in 1954 from a modest investment in PVC production with the aspiration of building Taiwan's chemical industry. Y.C. Wang became one of Asia's most celebrated industrialists, building the Formosa Plastics Group into a vertically integrated petrochemical empire spanning PVC (world's largest producer), BPA, oil refining (Formosa Petrochemical), and chemicals — largely from scratch in a Taiwan just emerging from Japanese occupation and the civil war. Wang was famous for frugality despite his wealth and for a management philosophy emphasizing continuous improvement — elements of the Toyota Production System were applied in Formosa Group factories before they were widely discussed in Western management literature.
