  • Did you know2024

The dramatic part of dry-bulk shipping — Capesize ships hauling iron ore and coal between a few giant terminals — is only half the story. Pacific Basin specializes in the other half: small, self-geared Handysize and Supramax vessels that carry "minor bulks" (grain, fertilizer, cement, logs, salt, sugar, steel products, minor ores) to and from the thousands of smaller ports the big ships can never reach. Because these vessels carry their own cranes, they can load and discharge where there is no shore-crane infrastructure at all. That makes geared minor-bulk operators like Pacific Basin the connective tissue of regional commodity trade — the ships that actually touch most of the world's ports and keep fertilizer, cement and grain moving into and out of developing economies, well below the radar of the headline iron-ore trade.

  • Concentration2024

Within dry bulk, the minor-bulk / geared-vessel segment is its own world, distinct from the Capesize majors, and Pacific Basin is one of its largest dedicated operators. The segment's resilience is structural: it is highly fragmented and the cargoes are diverse, so no single operator is critical — but the capability it provides (flexible, self-loading ships reaching small ports) is concentrated in a handful of specialists who maintain large geared fleets and the global commercial networks to fill them with hundreds of small, scattered cargoes. The diffuse trade in cement, fertilizer and grain to minor ports depends on that specialist capability remaining economically viable, even though any one ship is replaceable.
