  • Did you know2023

Rain Industries is widely known as a calcined petroleum coke (CPC) supplier to aluminum smelters. But Rain also produces coal tar pitch — through its Rain Chemicals division — which is the BINDER component of the same aluminum anodes. A prebaked aluminum anode consists of approximately 75% calcined petroleum coke (CPC, the filler) bound by approximately 25% coal tar pitch. Rain is one of the only companies globally that supplies both primary raw material inputs to aluminum anode manufacturing: CPC (from green petcoke via Rain CII Carbon calciners in Louisiana and Belgium) AND coal tar pitch (from coal tar distillation via Rain Chemicals in Germany and Belgium). Rain occupies a uniquely integrated position in the aluminum anode supply chain that no other single company replicates at comparable scale.

  • Origin2023

Rain Industries (formerly Rain Commodities) was built through acquisition of petcoke assets across continents — acquiring Rain CII Carbon's US calciners, then German coal tar chemical processor RÜTGERS, then Indian cement assets — assembling a conglomerate that spans petroleum refining byproducts, coal tar chemistry, and construction materials. The company is listed on the Indian stock exchange (RAIN.NS) and headquartered in Hyderabad, India, yet operates most of its industrial assets in the United States, Europe, and Russia. An Indian-listed, Hyderabad-headquartered company is one of the most significant global processors of petroleum and coal tar byproducts.

  • Capacity2023

Rain CII Carbon operates calciners in Louisiana (Lake Charles, Gramercy, Chalmette) that together represent one of the world's largest concentrations of CPC calcining capacity in a single geographic area. These facilities are within range of the same Gulf Coast refineries (ConocoPhillips Sweeny, ExxonMobil Baton Rouge, Marathon Garyville, others) that produce the green petcoke feedstock — creating a regional petcoke-to-aluminum-anode industrial ecosystem along the US Gulf Coast that has no equivalent elsewhere in the Western Hemisphere.
