Did you know2022
Sinopec Shanghai Petrochemical commenced production of large-tow carbon fiber (48K filament count) in 2022 — the first Chinese company to produce this grade at industrial scale — breaking China's 100% import dependency on Toray (Japan), Hexcel (US), and SGL Carbon (Germany). Large-tow carbon fiber is the structural material in Chinese missile airframes, UAV fuselages, satellite bodies, Long March rocket motor casings, and wind turbine blades. Current capacity is 12,000 tonnes/year; a RMB 3.196 billion expansion ($450M) is underway targeting 42,000+ tonnes/year across Shanghai and Inner Mongolia facilities. The same petroleum company that produces the asphalt on Chinese roads is now producing the structural carbon fiber in Chinese ICBMs.
PR Newswire / Sinopec ↗Chokepoint2022
Sinopec's SECCO complex in Shanghai (50:50 JV with INEOS, 4.2 million tonnes/year) is among the world's largest producers of acrylonitrile — the critical monomer that, combined with butadiene, produces nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) latex used in medical examination gloves. China produces the majority of the world's acrylonitrile, and Sinopec is the largest Chinese producer. This creates a two-node chokepoint in the global medical PPE supply chain: Chinese acrylonitrile production (Sinopec/SECCO upstream) → South Korean/Malaysian NBR latex producers (LG Chem, Kumho) → Malaysian nitrile glove manufacturers (Top Glove, Hartalega). Any disruption to Sinopec's acrylonitrile output would cascade through South Korean petrochemicals into Malaysian glove factories and ultimately US hospital supply chains.
INEOS ↗Capacity2025
Sinopec produces approximately 3.9 million tonnes/year of grey hydrogen as a byproduct of refining — claiming the title of world's largest single corporate hydrogen producer — plus 50,000+ tonnes/year of green hydrogen from solar-powered electrolysis projects in Xinjiang and Inner Mongolia, and has deployed 142 hydrogen refueling stations across China. A 4GW green hydrogen-to-ammonia joint venture in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia (with ACWA Power) targets large-scale export. In December 2024, Sinopec commissioned China's first seawater electrolysis hydrogen plant at Qingdao refinery — eliminating the freshwater constraint. Sinopec's infrastructure network (30,000 stations, storage pipelines, distribution) means that regardless of whether China's hydrogen comes from renewables or fossil sources, Sinopec will be the primary distribution chokepoint for any future hydrogen economy in China.
Zawya ↗Origin2025
Sinopec was formed in 1983 as a state consolidation of China's downstream petroleum refining and distribution assets under SASAC control, restructured for partial privatization and Hong Kong listing in 2000. From its origins as a refiner, it expanded upstream into E&P and downstream into chemicals and retail — eventually becoming simultaneously the world's largest refiner (252M t/yr crude throughput), the world's largest single ethylene producer (13.5M t/yr), and the owner of China's largest convenience store chain (28,000 Easy Joy locations). Total FY2024 operating revenue: RMB 3.07 trillion (~$423B) — larger than the GDP of most countries. The company is ultimately a policy instrument of the Chinese Communist Party, operated by SASAC-appointed management under a commercial listing structure.
