Tokuyama Corporation is headquartered in Shunan, Yamaguchi — a coastal industrial city on Japan's Seto Inland Sea originally built around Tokuyama's own chemical complex. The city was literally renamed 'Tokuyama' after the company in 1939 (it reverted to Shunan in 2003 through municipal merger). Founded in 1918 to produce soda ash, Tokuyama grew around local limestone deposits and seawater salt, eventually expanding into chlor-alkali chemicals, cement, specialty chemicals, and ultimately into the high-purity silicon materials that now serve the global semiconductor and solar industries.
