UACJ Corporation was formed in October 2013 by the merger of Furukawa-Sky Aluminum Corp. (part of Furukawa Group) and UBE-Mitsubishi Aluminum (part of Ube Industries and Mitsubishi Materials). Furukawa Group's history traces to the Ashio Copper Mine in Tochigi Prefecture — the site of Japan's most infamous 19th-century industrial pollution disaster. The Ashio copper mine's sulfur dioxide emissions and heavy metal tailings devastated the Watarase River basin from the 1880s, killing crops, fish, and eventually forcing the evacuation of downstream farming villages. The pollution scandal became a national political controversy and one of Japan's first environmental movements (1890s-1900s). The same Furukawa industrial family whose copper mining caused the Ashio disaster built a metals group that eventually contributed to UACJ — Japan's largest aluminum roller and a major supplier of beverage can sheet. The corporate genealogy from the Ashio copper mine pollution (1880s-1900s) to UACJ can sheet for Japanese vending machine beer cans (2024) spans 140 years of Japanese industrial transformation.
