Producer
Yunnan Tin Co., Ltd.
World's largest refined tin producer (SHEX: 000960); headquartered in Kunming, Yunnan Province, China. Produced 80,100 metric tons of refined tin in 2023 (+4% YoY), representing ~25% of global refined tin supply. Controls ~38% of Chinese domestic tin market. Operates advanced refining facilities in Kunming plus 5 major distribution centers. The Myanmar Wa State mining ban (August 2023) forced Yunnan Tin to diversify ore procurement from Indonesia, Peru, and Bolivia; Chinese workers previously operating in Wa State require visa reapplication. YTC's dominance in refined tin production means both float glass bath tin and electronics solder depend significantly on a single Yunnan Province operation.

Did you know2023
Yunnan Tin is publicly known as a tin company in the context of tin cans, but approximately 60-70% of global refined tin demand is for electronic solder — specifically SAC (tin-silver-copper) lead-free solder mandated by the EU RoHS directive since 2006. Every circuit board in every consumer electronic device, automotive ECU, server, and medical device is assembled using tin-based solder. Yunnan Tin supplies ~25% of global refined tin, meaning they supply a meaningful fraction of the solder connecting every transistor on every PCB globally. The August 2023 Wa State mining ban triggered a 20-30% increase in LME tin prices and a spot shortage of tin concentrate, which translated into electronics solder cost increases felt by PCB assemblers worldwide within weeks. A supply disruption from an autonomous armed group in Myanmar — banning mining in a region that existed outside both Myanmar government and international regulatory frameworks — had direct financial effects on every smartphone assembler, automotive electronics manufacturer, and computer OEM on Earth within weeks.
London Metal Exchange ↗Origin2023
Yunnan Province has been the dominant tin mining region in Asia since at least the Han Dynasty (206 BCE - 220 CE), when Chinese historical records document large-scale tin production from the Gejiu area. The Gejiu mines (known as the world's largest tin producing area historically) have been continuously mined for over 2,200 years. Yunnan Tin Company (YTC) is the state-controlled successor to this ancient mining heritage — nationalized in the 1950s, restructured as a listed company in 1996 (SHEX: 000960). The company controls over 38% of China's domestic tin refining capacity. In August 2023, Myanmar's Wa State autonomous region (Wa Special Region #2, a non-state armed group) banned all mining operations, cutting off a significant portion of Yunnan Tin's tin ore supply that had been sourced from Wa State mines operated by Chinese companies under informal arrangements. The Wa State mining ban was the single largest exogenous shock to global tin supply in decades — and was caused by an autonomous armed group's environmental enforcement action in a region the Myanmar military government does not control.
Yunnan Tin Co., Ltd. ↗Concentration2025
Yunnan Tin Company's Kunming refining complex in Yunnan Province, China produces approximately 25% of all global refined tin — more than any other single company or facility on Earth. This means one-quarter of all float glass bath tin and one-eighth of all electronics solder passes through a single Chinese provincial operation. Yunnan Tin's dominance has increased since the Myanmar ban (August 2023) disrupted competitor ore supplies while Yunnan Tin diversified sourcing from Indonesia and Peru. A U.S. export sanction on Yunnan Tin (similar to those applied to Chinese semiconductor companies) or a major operational disruption at the Kunming smelter would simultaneously shock global flat glass production and electronics manufacturing.
