The detergent maker behind Coca-Cola's secret

Stepan Company processes the only legal coca leaves in America—extracting both Coke's natural flavoring and pharmaceutical-grade cocaine.

The number

100metric tons of coca leaves imported annually

The New Jersey chemical giant famous for surfactants and dishwasher soap is the sole DEA-authorized processor of coca leaves in the U.S., importing them from Peru to split into two products: decocainized extract for Coca-Cola and surgical-grade cocaine for hospitals. It's the only FDA-approved vasoconstricting topical anesthetic in America.
