Title 16 › Chapter 37— YOUTH CONSERVATION CORPS AND PUBLIC LANDS CORPS › Subchapter II— PUBLIC LANDS CORPS › § 1726
The Secretary must give every Public Lands Corps participant and every resource assistant a living allowance. The Secretary may also give a Corps participant an education credit that can be used for college if the school agrees. Each person must agree to serve for the length of time the Secretary sets when they join. For the Indian Youth Service Corps, the Secretary must set service terms after talking with the affected Indian tribe. The Secretary can give Corps members credit for time served that helps with future Federal hiring. The Secretary can also give a former Corps member noncompetitive hiring status for up to 2 years after their service ends. For the rules in section 9602 of title 5, a former member hired under that noncompetitive status for a time-limited job is treated as if they were first hired through open, competitive hiring. These pay and hiring rules also apply to people placed in approved conservation projects through qualified youth or conservation corps, including placements by contract or agreement.
