Defines important terms used in the chapter. Alaska Native — means the same as “Native” in section 1602 of title 43. Dating violence, domestic violence, and personally identifying information — mean what they do in section 12291(a) of this title. Family violence — any act or threatened act (including holding someone against their will) that causes or could cause physical injury and is done by a person against someone related by blood, marriage, other legal tie, or someone they lived with. Indian, Indian tribe, and tribal organization — mean what they do in section 5304 of title 25. Native Hawaiian — means what it does in section 7517 of title 20. Secretary — the Secretary of Health and Human Services. Shelter — temporary refuge and services (like safe homes and meals) that follow state law and are given regularly to victims and their dependents. State — each State, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and, unless another rule says otherwise, Guam, American Samoa, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Northern Mariana Islands. State Domestic Violence Coalition — a statewide nonprofit made up mostly of the main domestic violence service providers, with a representative board, whose purpose is to support those providers, run a clearinghouse and resource center, and help develop policies and protocols. Supportive services — help for victims and exposed dependents to meet short-, transitional, or long-term safety needs and to provide counseling, advocacy, or other assistance. Tribally designated official — a person a tribe, tribal organization, or tribe-authorized nonprofit picks to run a grant under section 10409. Underserved populations — defined in section 12291(a); the Secretary has the same authority as the Attorney General under that section to decide if a group is underserved.
