Title 42 › CHAPTER 134 — ENERGY POLICY › SUBCHAPTER X — ENERGY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH › § 13501
The Secretary must set up a 5-year National Advanced Materials Program under sections 13541 and 13542. The program must speed up turning advanced materials research into products and parts, and help industry use those materials in energy-efficient and renewable technologies for industry, transportation, and buildings. It must include enough real-world demonstrations to show the ideas work technically and economically. Within 180 days after October 24, 1992, the Secretary must send Congress a 5-year plan made with industry, colleges, DOE national labs, and professional groups, and then update and send that plan every two years. Within 1 year after October 24, 1992, the Secretary must ask for proposals that explain how they will commercialize materials, whether DOE labs will join, what industry partners are involved, and proof the team can finish the work. The Secretary must also work with the General Services Administration to test advanced materials in GSA purchases, move funds to GSA for that, and may get whatever money is needed from the sources named in sections 13451(e) and 13471(c), including funds for DOE lab participation.
