A state or local officer or employee, and the agency that employs them, have the right to appear with a lawyer and be heard at the hearing under section 1504. After that hearing, the Merit Systems Protection Board must (1) decide whether a violation of section 1502 occurred; (2) decide whether that violation requires removing the officer or employee from their office or job; and (3) notify the officer or employee and the agency of the decision by registered or certified mail.
