An agency can pay moving and travel costs for an employee sent from their official work location to a different duty station for at least 6 months and up to 30 months, under rules made under section 5738. Instead of the regular relocation payments, the agency can cover travel to and from the new location, moving the employee’s family and household goods, a per‑day travel allowance for family en route, trips for the employee and spouse to find housing, temporary housing costs at the start and end of the assignment, a miscellaneous expense payment, transport of a privately owned vehicle, a tax allowance for reimbursements, non‑temporary storage of household goods (subject to a weight limit), and property management fees. An agency cannot pay for expenses the employee incurs after the temporary assignment has ended.
