FEMA Proposes Flood Hazard Updates, Comments Welcome

Published Date: 8/21/2026

Notice

Summary

Comments are requested on proposed flood hazard determinations, which may include additions or modifications of any Base Flood Elevation (BFE), base flood depth, Special Flood Hazard Area (SFHA) boundary or zone designation, or regulatory floodway on the Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), and where applicable, in the supporting Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for the communities listed in the table below. The purpose of this notice is to seek general information and comment regarding the preliminary FIRM, and where applicable, the FIS report that the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has provided to the affected communities. The FIRM and FIS report are the basis of the floodplain management measures that the community is required either to adopt or to show evidence of having in effect in order to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Map changes form basis for NFIP rules

FEMA states the FIRM and FIS report are the basis of the floodplain management measures that a community is required to adopt or show evidence of having in effect to qualify or remain qualified for participation in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). Communities must follow the floodplain management criteria required by 44 CFR 60.3 if the proposed flood hazard determinations become effective.

Preliminary flood maps open for comment

FEMA published preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) and Flood Insurance Study (FIS) reports for listed communities and is asking for public comments. Comments must be submitted on or before November 19, 2026, and the preliminary products are available online at https://hazards.fema.gov/femaportal/prelimdownload and at the community map repository addresses listed in the notice.

Specific communities listed for study updates

The notice lists the communities under study including Screven County, Georgia (Project 18-04-0006S; Preliminary Date: November 20, 2025) and Sedgwick County, Kansas (Project 21-07-0023S; Preliminary Date: January 22, 2026), with repository addresses for each city and unincorporated areas. These specific communities are the ones for which the proposed Base Flood Elevations, Special Flood Hazard Area boundaries, zone designations, or regulatory floodways may be added or modified.
