Assault reporting in rideshare and for‑hire services. This law directs the Government Accountability Office to study and report on fatal and nonfatal physical and sexual assaults involving Transportation Network Company drivers, other for‑hire drivers, and passengers.

  • Drivers: The GAO will document assaults against drivers by passengers and by people who pose as drivers. The first report covers calendar years 2019 and 2020.
  • Riders: Reports will cover assaults against riders by drivers or other passengers. The law defines sexual assault as any nonconsensual sexual act under federal, tribal, or state law, including when a victim lacks capacity to consent.
  • Companies and policymakers: GAO must describe the nature and specifics of background checks for prospective drivers, note applicable state and local laws, and summarize safety steps taken by transportation network companies and other for‑hire services. GAO must submit the first report within one year and then every two years thereafter.
