Born August 22, 1936 and died May 16, 2012, Brown taught himself guitar, released 22 studio albums, scored a 1979 R&B No.1 with "Bustin' Loose" for four weeks, received a 2005 National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship and a 2010 Grammy nomination, supported D.C. statehood through concerts, and has a D.C. street and park named after him.
