More global nutrition help for mothers and kids
The law directs USAID to fund and support programs to prevent and treat malnutrition abroad. It focuses on children under 5 and pregnant and breastfeeding women. Efforts include prenatal supplements, breastfeeding support, vitamin A, treatment foods, and safe fortification of staple foods. USAID selects priority countries using malnutrition rates and readiness, updates the list within five years, and can still act in other countries. USAID works with governments, U.N. agencies, nonprofits, and the private sector and can use grants, loans, guarantees, and its development finance role to mobilize money. These authorities end seven years after enactment.
Clear definitions and better aid tracking
The law defines key terms, including the USAID Administrator, priority countries, and the congressional committees that oversee this work. It adds this Act to the 2016 foreign aid transparency law, so agencies include these programs in public reporting. These changes make nutrition aid easier to track and compare.
Plan and yearly report on nutrition results
Within 260 days, USAID submits a plan with clear goals, metrics, and timelines to fight malnutrition. Starting within one year, USAID reports to Congress every year for five years. Reports list countries, people reached, progress on goals, research, partner coordination, and funding from other donors and host governments. These steps improve oversight and results.
USAID council to coordinate nutrition work
USAID sets up a Nutrition Leadership Council to guide and align its nutrition work. It includes key health, food security, and humanitarian bureaus. The council coordinates with other U.S. strategies and agencies so programs work together. This is internal coordination and does not pay benefits directly.
