Became Law

Summary

Overhaul how the VA evaluates claims tied to military sexual trauma (MST). The law directs the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to contract with the National Academies to carry out an independent, comprehensive review of the exams, tools, training, and provider credentials used to assess physical and mental MST-related conditions.

Show full summary
  • Veterans filing MST claims: The review will assess whether current exams and questionnaires capture MST impairments and whether internal pelvic exams are necessary or if alternatives should be offered when a veteran objects.
  • VA examiners and medical providers: The Academies must determine what credentials and training are needed to evaluate MST-linked physical conditions (including sexual dysfunction, pelvic and musculoskeletal issues, and cardiovascular conditions) and mental health conditions for men and women.
  • VA policy and Congress: The Academies must submit a report within 540 days after the VA enters the agreement with findings and recommendations, and the VA must submit its plans to act within 90 days after that report.
