Great Basin water rights stay protected

The law keeps existing water rules in place while this program runs. It does not change any interstate water compacts or valid state or federal water rights in the Great Basin. It also does not change how Bear Lake or Stewart Dam are managed, including water storage and releases.

New program to monitor Great Basin saline lakes

The Interior Department, through the U.S. Geological Survey, runs a new program to track water and wildlife at saline lakes in the Great Basin. It creates a multiyear plan with the Fish and Wildlife Service, states, Tribes, colleges, nonprofits, and local groups. The Secretary must send Congress a report on the plan within 1 year of enactment, and then carry it out. The program can fund partners with grants and cooperative agreements to monitor water, birds, and habitats. Congress authorizes $5 million each year from FY 2022 through FY 2027; actual spending still needs annual appropriations.
