Changes take effect October 1, 2021
All changes in this Act take effect October 1, 2021. This start date applies to the Capitol Police, the Capitol Police Board, and the two oversight committees. This timing rule does not change household money by itself.
Faster emergency help for Capitol Police
The law lets the Chief of the U.S. Capitol Police call in help fast during an emergency. The Chief can request support from federal agencies and the DC National Guard without prior Board approval. The Chief can also appoint special officers for the emergency. The Capitol Police Board can later revoke the request after consulting congressional leaders.
Regular oversight of Capitol Police Board
The Senate Rules and House Administration Committees can hold joint hearings on the Capitol Police Board. They can require all Board members to attend. The Committees must hold at least one joint oversight hearing each Congress.
