Dental Loan Repayment Assistance Act of 2025

Sponsored By: Representative Van Drew, Jefferson [R-NJ-2]

Introduced

Summary

This bill would make certain federal dental loan repayments _tax-free for dental school faculty_. It would expand the Internal Revenue Code to let repayments from the Dental Faculty Development and Loan Repayment Program (Public Health Service Act section 748(a)(2)) be excluded from gross income and would require the Government Accountability Office to report on program participation and retention.

Show full summary
  • Dental school faculty would be able to exclude from taxable income loan repayments awarded under the Dental Faculty Development and Loan Repayment Program. This targets federally subsidized repayments tied to dental faculty positions.
  • Congress and oversight bodies would get more data. GAO must report to the appropriate congressional committees on how many dental providers and faculty participate in the program and the extent they remain full-time faculty teaching and practicing in dental schools, hospitals, or community-affiliated clinics after receiving funding.

Tax relief for dental faculty loan aid

If enacted, you would be able to exclude certain dental loan repayments from federal income. This would cover payments from the Dental Faculty Development and Loan Repayment Program. It would only apply to amounts you get in tax years starting after the date of enactment. This could lower your federal tax bill on those payments.
