Grants to keep rural hospitals open

If enacted, the bill would create grants to help rural hospitals stay open. Congress would authorize $500 million total for fiscal years starting after September 30, 2025, and each hospital could get up to $5 million over any five-year period. Money could pay for repairs, equipment, and operating costs like payroll and debt, but not payroll for leadership positions. Hospitals would need to apply, show how the money protects access to care, and explain how projects will continue after federal support; funds must add to, not replace, other public funds. A rural hospital would be at least 15 miles from the nearest hospital and 20 miles from the nearest urbanized area, and HHS would report to Congress on results within 18 months of enactment.
