Gerald E. Connolly Esophageal Cancer Awareness Act of 2025

A GAO report on esophageal cancer care and screening in the Federal Employees Health Benefits Program requires the Government Accountability Office to report to Congress on FEHBP spending for enrollees diagnosed with esophageal cancer and on how often FEHBP participants at high risk receive screenings that follow established guidelines. The law highlights that esophageal cancer is rising and often deadly when found late, notes early detection of Barrett’s esophagus can improve survival, and cites the American Gastroenterological Association recommendation to use upper endoscopy for people with three or more risk factors such as male sex, non‑Hispanic white ethnicity, age 50 or older, smoking, chronic reflux, obesity, or a family history.
